CHENNAI: Hair stylist Yesu Raja L and his partner Shobi S,26, a costume designer, are elated. “We were waiting nervously for the SC's decision," says Raja, 23. “Now we have hope that things will change for couples like us.“
When Shobi came out to his parents a couple of years ago, they were shocked and upset. “Now they have slowly come around to accepting it,"he says.
Yesu Raja, on the other hand, came out to his mother and siblings only three months ago. “I met Shobi at the Chennai Rainbow Film Festival held by Chennai Dost and we hit it off,“ says Yesu Raja. “We have now been living together for a year but I initially hid it from my folks.“
Though some of their friends do know they are a couple, they take care not to flaunt their relationship.“Though we do go to the workplace together, we have confided in only a few close people. We also go to the beach and movies like heterosexual couples but don't publicly display any affection,“ says Shobi.“We didn't also talk about our relationship while house hunting also because in Chennai few people understand it.“
Both hope that with SC agree ng to re-examine its verdict on homosexuality and referring the matter to a five-judge Constitution bench will change things for the better. They are waiting for the law to change so that they can marry .“We want to get marry in France, it is our dream destination,“ says Yesu Raja
